The Life Cycle of a Butterfly

The children in Senior Infants and First Class have enjoyed learning about the life cycle of a Butterfly. We read parts of a non-fiction book about the butterflies life cycle. We learned new words such as female butterfly, caterpillar, camouflage and pupa. We talked about the life cycle at our recent school assembly. The children loved performing an action rhyme called Butterfly Inside for all the children in our school! We made butterflies as part of Arts and Crafts as well.

The First Class boys and girls did some explanation writing as part of a shared writing experience. They used time connectives and the description bubble to help them with explanation writing.image (19) image (16)

Take a read of our explanation:

The Life Cycle of a Butterfly

The butterfly is an insect. It is found in most parts of the world.

Firstly the female butterfly lays eggs. The egg is on a leaf. It is small. It is light green.

Secondly the egg hatches into a caterpillar. The caterpillar is eating leaves. It has lots of legs. It is hairy. The caterpillar is camouflaged by its surroundings.

Next the caterpillar rolls up into a pupa. The pupa is hanging from a tree. It is round. It will crack open in two weeks. The pupa is grey and green.

Finally the pupa cracks open and the butterfly comes out. The butterfly takes a rest for a few hours. It has two wings. The butterfly is small.

While butterflies are found all over the world they have similar life cycles.
