On Friday 24th April 2015, Rathnure N.S. became the first school in the South East to be awarded the Health Promoting School Award. Achieving this award was the result of a lot of hard work by the HPS Committee and staff. This means that our school encourages everyone to look after all aspects of their health; physical, mental and emotional. This initiative encompassed our entire school community; pupils, parents and staff. To promote healthy eating, we built a Poly Tunnel in which we have grown lots of fruit and vegetables. We follow a healthy eating policy which means we eat healthy and wholesome lunches each day.
To encourage our pupils to be more active, we completed the Switch Off, Get Active Challenge in the first term. This involved pupils switching off the t.v. and computer games and getting outside and being active. All classes worked very hard to achieve the total target of 6000 hours of activity.
6th Class also challenged the teachers to a Step Challenge in which everyone involved received a pedometer which tracked steps taken each day. This year the teachers were successful!
We strive to continue being a Health Promoting Schools and continuing all the good habits we have picked up as a result of participating in this award.
