Green Schools

Rathnure NS has already been awarded three Green Flags for our Litter and Waste, Energy and Water projects. This is a tremendous achievement of which we are very proud.

Our school, is now working towards earning our 4th flag, this time the focus is on Active Travel. The aim of the travel flag is :

‘to encourage students, parents and teachers to walk, cycle, Park ‘n’ Stride, use public transport or car pool instead of using the private car on the school run’

By promoting sustainable transport modes (walking, cycling, car pooling or public transport), our school will also improve pupils’ safety, health and fitness. The journey to school is an ideal way for children to take part in regular physical activity, to interact with their peers, and to develop the road sense children need as pedestrians and cyclists. Alternative modes of transport also improve children’s alertness. Through this we will also lessen our overall impact on the environment, by reducing emissions and pollution.
